A serious bus accident involving three New Jersey Transit vehicles disrupted Wednesday morning’s rush hour, temporarily shutting down New York City’s Port Authority Bus Terminal. The bus crash took place shortly after 6:00 a.m. in the terminal’s unloading zone near West 41st Street in Midtown Manhattan.
Authorities report that twelve individuals sustained minor injuries in the crash. One injured person required transport to Bellevue Hospital for further evaluation. Among the most concerning moments of the incident was the entrapment of one of the bus operators, who was rescued from the wreckage by the Port Authority Police Department’s emergency services team.
Despite the frightening scene, officials expect all injured parties to fully recover. The terminal, which experienced several hours of disruption, reopened to buses around 10:00 a.m.
The crash led to significant transit delays as buses were rerouted to alternative locations including Secaucus Junction, Hoboken Terminal, and Newark Penn Station. Many commuters were left seeking other ways into Manhattan, with NJ Transit arranging for additional train stops and honoring bus tickets on various rail, PATH, and ferry services to ease the commute.
While investigators continue to examine the circumstances that caused the crash, early reports suggest that one of the drivers may have experienced a medical issue just prior to the collision.
