Most people are not aware that computers were installed in their car by the car’s manufacturer, and also possibly by their car’s insurance company, and that they are monitoring your driving history and habits, and that your auto insurance rates can be affected by these recorded results.
Tesla has the most extensive data collection. GM has an OnStar Smart Driver computer. BMW Mercedes-Benz, Hyundai, Kia, Genesis and many of the other car companies have various devices to record your driving history. This history can include everything that the driver has done, including; the distances traveled, speed, acceleration and braking.
These companies can then send this information to your insurance company to “assist” them in setting your renewal rates.
When you purchased your car were you handed a stack of documents to sign that you did not carefully read and which may have included language about the computer that was installed in your vehicle and that would now track your driving history?
When you purchased your car were you made aware of this computer’s existence?
Were you made aware that the information could be shared with your insurance company and then be used to set your rates?
Aside from your car manufacturer tracking you with their computer the insurance companies now also have their own computers to also track your driving habits. Progressive, State Farm, Allstate, Geico, Liberty Mutual, Nationwide, USAA, Farmers and many other insurance companies have various tracking programs.
A while ago I was happily surprised when my insurance agent called me with the good news that he had reduced my car insurance premium. I was then surprised to learn that the reduction was based on my agreeing to have my driving history tracked by my insurance company. Although I have not had any tickets while driving for over 30 years, I still find it makes me uncomfortable to know that every time I drive that my every move is being tracked and stored.
The information being gathered by the car’s manufacturer as well as your insurance company can and will be used against you in the event of any litigation if you are involved in a motor vehicle accident.
