The lateral move of Real Estate partner Varuna Bhattacharyya to Seyfarth was notably featured in New York Law Journal, Bloomberg Law, Law360, and Commercial Observer. Bhattacharyya discussed her recent work on a $100 million construction loan for a New York City project on behalf of an institutional lender, highlighting how the deal reflects her favorite part of the job—and the kind of work she’s excited to continue doing at Seyfarth. Her practice focuses on permanent, mezzanine, and other leveraged financings, with expertise in loan-on-loan, REPO, and similar arrangements, covering acquisitions, construction, bridge, and permanent loans, as well as complex intercreditor, co-lender, and leveraged transactions.
The NYLJ, in a front page story, wrote: “Bhattacharyya said in an interview that she was drawn to Seyfarth Shaw by its strong real estate platform, noting that she has been its opposing counsel many times in the past and also has friends who have joined the firm before her. Bhattacharyya said she is looking forward to growing her practice and meeting the increased demands in the real estate finance market in 2025 and beyond. ‘This year, the growth and volume and number of deals, that’s just really skyrocketed and it’s a great feeling because as we all know it was a little slow in ‘23,’ Bhattacharyya said. ‘It definitely feels like, especially in the finance world, there’s new loans being made, new originations, construction loans, and more which is all very exciting.’”
She told Law360 in a feature story: “Ground-up construction is really exciting, when you start with a vacant piece of land. For me, living and working in the area, it’s really nice to walk by these plots of land that used to just be vacant land and now are these luxury condos or hotels or office buildings or whatever it is that’s been constructed with the funds from my client..”
Bhattacharyya shared with Commercial Observer: “Seyfarth offers a rare combination of longstanding strength and stellar reputation, paired with a genuine sense of growth and innovation. I’m thrilled to join this exceptional real estate team and honored by the opportunity to further develop my practice.”
Bloomberg Law wrote: “Bhattacharyya counsels both borrowers and lenders, including financial institutions and real estate funds, in all aspects of complex real estate financings from origination through closing. She provides experience in permanent loans, mezzanine loans and other leveraged financings and offers proficiency in loan on loan, REPO and other arrangements.”
